ACSS

Pooya Gharb Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported, ACSS, is a concentric lay-stranded conductor composed of a stranded steel central core around which one or more layers of 1350-0 aluminum wires are stranded; “0” denotes fully annealed or soft temper of the aluminum.

Features and Benefits

Although ACSS conductor looks just like conventional ACSR, it provides significant advantages that make it highly superior for certain applications.

-      ACSS can operate continuously at very high temperature up to 250 C, depending on the protective coatings of the steel core.

-      Current carrying capacity of ACSS is much higher than standard ACSR, this is due to ACSS higher temperature rating and its soft aluminum conductivity which is 63 percent compared to 61.2 percent of hard drawn aluminum in ACSR.

-      ACSS has significantly less sag at high temperatures, allowing for lower tower height

-      Long time creep of aluminum is not a factor in final sag-tension performance of ACSS

-      Self-damping capability of ACSS is substantially higher than that of conventional conductors of comparable sizes.

-      ACSS has high degree of immunity  to vibration fatigue

-      ACSS has unique capability for damping mechanical oscillations, such as those associated with aeolian vibration.

 

All of these performance advantages stem from the fact that aluminum wires surrounding the steel core of ACSS conductor are factory annealed and have very low yield strength; in contrast to aluminum wires in ACSR which are in the hard drawn temper.
